Add Bram Stoker Award winner to Vince's list of professional literary accomplishments! On June 13th, Vince and co-editor Chad Helder won the prestigious award for their work on Unspeakable Horror: From the Shadows of the Closet during a gala awards ceremony in Burbank, California. It's the first time that a GLBT anthology has ever taken the award in its category - Superior Achievement in an Anthology - in the sponsoring organization's 22-year history.
During his accpetance speech, Vince thanked each of the anthology's contributors, who include Lee Thomas, Jameson Currier, Rick R. Reed, Kealan Patrick Burke, and Sarah Langan (herself picking up another statuette that evening for Superior Achievement in Short Fiction). On the award, Vince says, "I'm beyond surprised...humbled and deeply grateful to the members of the Horror Writers Association who saw the universality of this collection. To be the first GLBT horror anthology to win the award is pure icing on the cake, and a great testament to the incredible writers we share this award with. It's still all a bit surreal to have accepted an award during a ceremony in which Stephen King won two [awards] himself!"

Unspeakable Horror Named a Stoker Awards Finalist...
Vince's editorial debut, Unspeakable Horror: From the Shadows of the Closet, has been named a finalist in the 2008 Bram Stoker Awards. Each year, the Horror Writer’s Association presents the Bram Stoker Awards for Superior Achievement, named in honor of Bram Stoker, author of the seminal horror work, Dracula. The Stoker Awards were instituted immediately after the organization’s incorporation in 1987. Today, the Stokers are considered the horror genre's highest literary honor.
The Stoker Awards, like the Oscars, are non-juried awards. Any work of Horror first published in the English language may be considered for a Stoker during the year of its publication. The HWA membership at large recommends worthy works for consideration. A preliminary ballot is compiled using a formula based on recommendations. Two rounds of voting by the organization’s Active members determine first the finalists, and then the winners. The winners will be announced and the awards presented during a gala banquet held in California at the Burbank Marriott on June 13th in conjunction with the HWA’s annual conference.
Nominated for Superior Achievement in an Anthology, Unspeakable Horror joins this year’s other nominees - including Stephen King, Gary Braunbeck, Nate Kenyon, and others - as they vie for honors in a total of (8) categories. (For a full listing of the nominees, click on the photo of the Stoker statuette.)
Vince says that he’s “honored, humbled, and deeply appreciative of the HWA’s recognition of the Unspeakable Horror anthology.” Vince co-edited the project with friend and frequent collaborator Chad Helder, an acclaimed poet, comic book writer, and founder of the anthology's namesake website.

Drop Your Shorts, Then Turn Your Head and Scream…
Tired of waiting for new fiction from Vince? If so, pick up a copy of the new short story collection Malpractice: An Anthology of Bedside Terror, which features Vince’s original short story “The Night Nurse of Cobblestone.” Set in a healthcare facility and involving some unpleasantness with necrotic tissue and a nurse with a particulary bad bedside manner, “Cobblestone” is dark, allegorical tale of the horrors of aging – with a howling good twist!
Published by Stygian Publications, Malpractice features eighteen original short stories and thirteen 100-word pieces of flash fiction revolving around a fictional hospital. From the back cover copy:
Are you scared about going to the doctor? Maybe you should be.
From the outside, a hospital is a place of safety and recovery, where the injured go to regain their strength to face the world again. Sadly, within the sterile white walls of Bloom Memorial, evil burns through every room. Every lab. Every corridor. The so-called doctors are impersonators. Lab-coated viruses infecting all they touch, they labor toward their own purpose.
Death.
Be warned. With 18 short stories and 13 100-word bites from some of the best horror writers, this collection of medical terror will cut you to the bone.
Some early praise for Malpractice: An Anthology of Bedside Terror:
“There are no HMOs where you are going. Malpractice is a gut-wrenching and visceral collection of horror stories that feverishly compounds our worst hospital fears. Although I may never be able to visit a hospital again without my knees rattling, I thoroughly enjoyed these well-crafted tales. Thematically, this anthology is a brilliant concept and ultimately flawlessly executed.” – Tim Deal, Shroud Magazine
We’re pleased to report that Vince has contributed an original essay to the My Diva: 65 Gay Men on the Women Who Inspire Them anthology to be released by the University of Wisconsin Press this May. “Jamie Lee Curtis: When the Artist Met His Muse” will appear in the forthcoming collection, edited by poet Michael Montlack.
About the anthology:
From Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Midler, and Diana Ross to Queen Elizabeth I, Julia Child, and Princess Leia, these divas have been sister, alter ego, fairy godmother, or model for survival to gay men and the closeted boys they once were. And anyone—straight or gay, young or old, male or female—who ever needed a muse, or found one, will see their own longing mirrored here as well. These witty and poignant short essays explore reasons for diva-worship as diverse as the writers themselves. My Diva offers both depth and glamour as it pays tribute with joy, intelligence, and fierce, fierce love.
Some advance word on My Diva:
“Inspiration is contagious—and inspiration, excitement, and appreciation resonate through these essays. This is a story about how in the worst of times, there are the best of women—women in whom we find our courage and sometimes our heartbroken tenderness. My Diva is an act of love, well deserved and without reservation. Read it in the spirit in which it was made—this act of adoration, awe, and yes, love.”— Dorothy Allison, author of Bastard Out of Carolina
“These deeply personal, campy, and insightful essays illuminate the eternal bond between gay men and their fabulous diva icons.”— Michael Musto
“A completely fascinating and lovely book. In every case the diva is a kind of saint—for her suffering, for the emotional warble in her voice, as she sang, as she spoke those classic lines. It’s hard to miss the dovetailing of the gay male writer’s psyche and the voluptuous (much more than her body) voice of the diva. She shines her light on the way. Man, does she ever.”— Eileen Myles, author of Sorry, Tree
Unspeakable Horror: From the Shadows of the Closet, an anthology of queer-themed horror stories that Vince co-edited with Chad Helder, has been released.
From the ghosts of dead lovers and malevolent queer faeries to devious doppelgangers and twisted psychopaths, an eclectic lineup of award-winning writers from the horror and GLBT literary communities come together in this groundbreaking collection of queer horror stories. These tales will surprise with their universally resonant themes while exploring the deeper aspects of the closet experience - coming out, staying in, and being haunted by.
Some advance reviews:
“In reflecting on this book, I'm reminded of how much fine work is being produced by the indie press. Liaguno and Helder, to their credit, took their time in producing the finest anthology possible, and the finished product doesn't disappoint. On the whole, Unspeakable is a highly recommended read for all horror fans, as it offers something for everyone. Lovers of the dark, the literary, the gruesome, and even the disgusting, will find something to treasure.” – Fear Zone
"Whether you’re a fan of crime, mystery, fantasy or straight-up horror, chances are something that lurks in this anthology’s closet will reach out and grab you. And if you wind up sleeping with the lights on...you will have gotten your money’s worth." - Horror World
"Unspeakable Horror is a standout anthology with a unique focus on queer-themed horror tales. There's a lot to recommend, from tales where horror takes a back seat to the characters and musing tales of their challenges, to stories starring vampires, zombies, ghosts, evil faeries, doppelgangers, and more who complicate already conflicted lives. These tales do not isolate or exclude, but rather put readers in the heads of those who feel lost, struggling with ideas of society, sexuality and themselves." - Monster Librarian
Vince to Appear in Forthcoming Poetry Anthology...
Vince will have two poems - "Tyro" and "Chatroom Hustler" - featured in Death in Common: Poems from Unlikely Victims, a forthcoming themed poetry anthology about the humanity within the victims of serial killing. The concept was inspired by Edgar Lee Master's Spoon River Anthology.
The collection is edited by Rich Ristow, the Science Fiction Poetry Association's 2007 Rhysling Award winner for short poem. Ristow is also the author of the novelette, Into The Cruel Sea, published through Skullvines Press, and he holds an MFA in poetry from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
Some advance blurbs for the collection:
"For the connoisseur of the morbid, opening Death in Common will be akin to sorting through a delightfully gore-soaked Whitman’s Sampler of sweetmeats, discovering wicked flavors with each new bite. From Rich Ristow’s fascinatingly ghoulish concept spills a full cornucopia of horrors, from Marge Simon’s dark elegance to the gruesome poetic justice of Wrath James White, from Kurt Newton’s blood-black comedy to Christopher Conlon’s unsettling poignancy, from Louise Bohmer’s sensual brutality to the beautiful despair of Barry Napier’s finale." - Mike Allen, three-time Rhysling Award winner and editor of Mythic Delirium
"Death in Common: Poems from Unlikely Victims brings unusual depth, creativity and chillingly potent imagery to what is often referred to as 'horror poetry.' The poems within this unique volume are not simply horrific, they’re genuinely lyrical and wonderfully human stories as well, and that’s not easily accomplished by any poet, living, dead, or somewhere in between." - T.M. Wright, author of Bone Soup (Cemetery Dance, 2009) and Blue Canoe (PS Publications, 2009)
Vince's new interview with Johnathon Schaech is out now in the May 2008 issue of Autograph Magazine. Schaech (whose last name rhymes with "deck") is an actor and screenwriter, best known for his roles in films like How to Make an American Quilt, That Thing You Do!, Hush, The Forsaken, the TV biopic Houdini, and the recent teen slasher hit Prom Night. He was also married to Married with Children and Samantha Who? actress Christina Applegate, but the two divorced in August 2007. This is actually the second half of a longer interview Vince did with him; the first half appears in its entirety at Dark Scribe Magazine.
Schaech has now branched out into screenwriting, collaborating with writing partner Richard Chizmar (the well-regarded Cemetery Dance publisher) on several film and TV scripts, including an adaptation of Bentley Little's short story The Washingtonians for the Showtime series Masters of Horror and adaptations of two Stephen King books - From a Buick 8 and Black House (which King co-wrote with Peter Straub).
You can pick up a copy of Autograph at your local Borders or Barnes & Noble and it can also be ordered online. Click on the cover for a preview of the interview.

Awards & Accolades...
Www.VinceLiaguno.com is pleased to report that The Literary Six has been the recipient of several literary awards and nominations:
Winner: IPPY Award (Silver) in the Horror category; presented during BookExpo in NYC on June 1st.
Finalist: ForeWord Magazine's Book of the Year Awards in the Gay/Lesbian Fiction category
Nominated: LAMBDA Literary Awards in both the Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror and Gay Men's Mystery categories
Nominated: 2007 Gaylactic Spectrum Award in the Best Novel category
On the book's recent award wins and nominations, Vince says, "I'm thrilled and humbled beyond belief by the book's good fortune. It's gratifying to be recognized for the blood, sweat, and tears that went into writing The Literary Six. I want to thank all of the readers who continue to support the book."
In addition, author Rick R. Reed, whose own recent novel IM is garnering strong critical notice, recently had these words to say about The Literary Six:
"Revenge stories, especially in the horror genre, have a tradition all their own. We've all seen variations on the theme. But what makes Liaguno's variation so compelling is the way he makes it his own, creating real, flesh-and-blood characters who are as flawed as the people in our own lives. This makes us care about them at the start of the novel, when they are college students, and much later, when the horror of their alliance comes back to haunt them. Liaguno is masterful at creating suspense and dread, but what really makes you afraid, and what really involves you in THE LITERARY SIX is the way he makes you care about the characters: there are genuine goosebumps when you see people you recognize and empathize with, and this is where Liaguno's talent soars."
Vince wishes to thank Rick Reed for his kind words in support of The Literary Six!

Autographed Copies of The Literary Six Now Available...
Just in time for Christmas, autographed copies of The Literary Six are now available exclusively through the online retail outlet Shocklines. And, as a bonus for those who purchase the book through Shocklines, you'll receive with each signed paperback or hardcover copy a limited-edition 35-piece jigsaw puzzle of the Holly Smith-created cover artwork - also signed by Vince!
Shocklines is the brainchild of entrepreneur Matt Schwartz, a longtime supporter of the horror literature community. Back in 1995, Schwartz created and maintained the original HorrorNet.com, a hub of horror websites designed to promote the horror fiction community. In addition to providing one of the first horror-fiction-based chatrooms and message boards, the site contained mini-sites for dozens of small press publishers, horror authors, and horror magazines, including Cemetery Dance, Gauntlet Press, George R. R. Martin, Douglas Clegg, Edward Lee, Subterranean Press, Borderlands Press, Ray Garton, and countless others.
When HorrorNet.com caught the eye of the powers that be at Barnes & Noble, Schwartz was hired on to be one of the first employees at barnesandnoble.com, handling all of their genre fare and limited edition sales, and eventually rising to editorial director. After that, Schwartz continued to wreak havoc on the .com world, taking a couple of VP of E-commerce gigs for niche sites like NextPlanetOver.com and Games.com (a former subsidiary of Hasbro), but ultimately decided to return his true love, horror. In late 2000, Schwartz began selling horror books full-time via ebay under the name of SpinMatt Auctions, which was the forerunner to Shocklines.com, a site that aims to be the one-stop shop for horror-related merchandise on the web, with a focus on horror fiction and poetry as well as artwork and related areas. Today, Shocklines is recognized as being the premiere online outlet for horror fiction.
